TEN

Josh pushed aside his empty Sam Adams and rolled his knuckles on the table. The sound couldn’t be heard over the music and talk about a whole lot of nothing the boys were engaging in as they wound down after working all day at their respective jobs. Some were playing pool, others were lounging. All were enjoying cold beer and the company of their brothers.

Josh was trying to control his impatience. Not surprisingly, leaving Tish on her own wasn’t sitting well with him. Problem was, he couldn’t figure out if he was a possessive ass or if his instincts were pinging and he was making a mistake ignoring them the way he had when he’d left Elli at home with his suicidal mother.

“How’s married life?”

“Good,” he muttered.

“Never know it by lookin’ at you.”

He tried to ignore Chase, who was stating the obvious from the corner of the sectional. Nick had just gone over to check on the huge pot of corn chowder he had simmering on the stove. Josh could see the boys eyeing it, waiting for the flag to drop and the line to form.

He took a hard knock to the shoulder.

“This what I’m missing?” Chase waved a hand in Josh’s face. “This shit you and Adam have sitting in the back of your eyes all the time? I thought settling down was supposed to make a man happy. You two make it look more like torture. Maybe I’ll find myself a surrogate. Know anyone who’ll let me knock her up and keep the kid for myself after she has it?”

“I’ve been working on getting Tish pregnant,” he blurted like a fuckin’ dweeb. But, fuck, he needed a distraction, and talking about Tish popping out his offspring was precisely that.

Chase barked out a laugh. “I’m sure you have. She aware there’s a reason you can’t keep it out of her? Aside from the obvious.”

“Yup.”

It was as if a breeze swept in to clear out the humor and bring Chase forward. He tipped his hat back and sat on the edge of the sofa, mirroring Josh’s edgy pose.

“Fuck you. She’s willing to play Betty Crocker? She’s twenty fuckin’ years old.”

“Not for a few more days.”

“Jesus Christ.” Impatience emanated from his Prez, the shit so tangible it nearly had Josh shifting away. “And you have the nuts to sit here with that look on your fuckin’ face? I kicked forty’s ass two years ago, my friend. Do you know how stoked I’d be if I was in the process of planting my seed in a woman half my age? One I could stand being around for more than five minutes, that is.”

“Believe me, I’m stoked. I’m so goddamned stoked it’s making me sick.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m a selfish cunt who doesn’t deserve the little girl I’m roping in.”

“Tish is no little girl. But you already know that.” He nodded to one of their veterans. “The difference between your woman and others her age is what’s in her head. You haven’t seen Raisin’s twins for a while, but those girls are twenty-three now.
